The Little Prince

“The most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or touched, they are felt with heart.” This is one quote from The Little Prince. This book is ostensibly seen as a children’s book, but it actually shows human nature and Antoine’s own view of the world. This is why I did not fully understand the book when I first read it. When I reread it recently, I feel it will be interesting to adapt it to a play. This story has been adapted several versions of movies and plays. I will personalize every character, and the theme is romance.
Firstly, it is important to talk about the characters. Except the little prince, in this book, rose, fox are also important characters. Though they are not humans, but these characters can be personalized. For example, Rose is self-centered and naive. She always breaks his heart, and this actually motivates him to travel to other planets. Rose is like the stroppy but sensitive girlfriend in a relationship. Also, during his journey, he meets people on different planets, such as the rude king, vain man, or the geologist. These people all give little prince some lessons. These characters can be all played by one person. Consider the balance of the lines, I might have one person play the little prince, a girl play rose and fox, one person play the king and geologist. The character, author, will not appear in this play. The little prince’s thoughts will be narrated by himself instead of having conversations with the author. Consequently, this play needs at least three actors.

This book tells little prince’s journey. The little prince and rose live in a tiny planet. The little prince loves rose, but he leaves the planet to look for true meaning of love. He meets several strangers on the journey, and he uses his own view to see those people. In my play, I would like to set four to six short scenes. One is on the little prince’s planet. There will be conversations between the rose and him. The following few scenes are the little prince traveling to other planets and having conversations with them. Then the last scene is between the little prince and the fox. This happens in the last place the little prince travels to—earth. He meets the fox here. The little prince tames fox, but he then realizes he misses his rose. In this scene, the little prince learns responsibility to his lover. This scene is important, and it ends with fox looking at prince leave. Compare rose and fox, rose is relying on the little prince, while fox’s love is maturer. Consequently, these scenes show different messages of love to the audience.

In conclusion, the book is a children’s book, but this play will be a romance to older people. Rose, fox, these characters will be played by actors, and the story would be a journey for prince to explore the true meaning of love. In addition, I will use change of scenes and settings to show the little prince’s traveling to different planets.
